My Pregnancy Story

We found out we were expecting our little one on June 12, 2014. I had a feeling I was pregnant a few days before I took the test(s), but wanted to wait until I actually missed my period to take one. I haven't been on birth control in a couple of years with all of the moving around I've done and transferring of doctors and insurance (yada yada), I didn't deem it necessary. However my period's have always been pretty consecutive because I had been previously on it. I knew that the day I missed my period, I would have to take a test because my body just hasn't missed one before.

I was having early pregnancy symptoms a few days before the missed period though. I noticed them right away when I was taking a shower and my boobs were just so tender. It literally hurt to rub on body wash! I had also been noticing that I had been sleeping a lot more. As a person that sleeps a lot on a regular basis, I was sleeping practically the whole day away. The day I missed my period I was at work and I had been worrying all day, and of course worrying Brian as well. On our way home we stopped at our local Dollar General and picked up a test. I came home and immediately went to the bathroom to take it while Brian waited anxiously on the couch. We had to wait the dreaded two minutes for some sort of something to appear on the little screen and it did. I was pregnant. The line was faint, but still there so we questioned it at first. Brian took the test downstairs and showed his little brother and we both just stood there in shock. We decided that maybe, just maybe, the test was a little faulty since the line was so faint so we went back to Dollar General and picked up not one, but two more. All the while I was chugging down water so I could take them again immediately. We got home, I took another, positive. Just for good measure I took the third, another positive. This was it, I was officially pregnant.
So the next few things we did went by like a fast motion blur. Brian immediately called his mom and I called mine. Brian's mom was less than thrilled, but honestly I couldn't have blamed her. She had been in the hospital all day with her boyfriend in ICU so I'm sure something this dramatic would have upset me too. She later called back and said that she's actually really excited and can't wait to be a grandma. My mom and I's conversation went basically the same, she wasn't surprised and actually expected this to happen the second I moved out (which thankfully did not happen). My mom and I talked for about two hours and the more we talked the more I could tell how excited she was. We then went to the store and picked up some prenatal vitamins so I could start taking them every night.
The next day I called my insurance company and changed all of my primary care doctor's over to where I'm currently living, which that in itself took up far too much time, and then I called the Naval Hospital which is where my doctor is. The way it's set up there is you have to go into Family Medicine and fill out paperwork, then proceed to go to the Lab and take a urine analysis and get your blood drawn to confirm the pregnancy. This in itself was terrifying, I was so scared that we had just told our mom's and then we would have to call back and just say it was a false positive. But the next day I received the phone call that I was confirmed pregnant and we set up my first doctors appointment to be on my 8th week, on July 9th.
After everything was confirmed, we really got our butt's in gear. We immediately started looking for apartments and found just the perfect one for the, now three, of us. Once we signed the lease we knew we'd have to share the news with our dad's, which both scared us even more. I called my dad and told him first, sharing the apartment news and then breaking down the other news. Surprisingly, I was met with confidence and a lot of, "I'll help you with everything, don't worry." That was honestly such a sigh of relief. Telling Brian's dad was such a whole 'nother thing because we actually had to tell him face-to-face, whereas everyone else had been over the phone. Again, he surprisingly took it really well too. Of course we started off with the apartment which was nice and I think that actually was a good buffer for him as well. All in all, our parents are actually pretty excited to become grandparents and I'm really happy this hasn't been a damper on our families.
Now, we're just patiently waiting for this first appointment tomorrow and ready to move out next week. This is such a big thing for us and although it's happening sooner rather than the hoped later, we couldn't be more thrilled to welcome a little baby into this world.

xo, Kirsten
